North Coast Challenge sees
closest finish in 18 years of racing

WESTLAKE —
Stephen Koech, 31, edged out Nicholas Kurgot, 29, by just seven-tenths of a second at the finish line. The top five runners finished within six seconds of each other. The event raised over $45,000 for local nonprofit organizations, race chairman William “Bud” Hagy said.

BAY VILLAGE — A 7-year-old Brook Park boy died as a result of being underwater for nearly an hour in rough Lake Erie waters off Huntington Beach late Monday afternoon. Divers from the fire departments of Bay Village, Avon Lake and Rocky River were involved in the rescue attempt.
Nature and Science Center heading beach cleanup project
BAY VILLAGE — Volunteers will assemble at Huntington Beach between 10 a.m. to noon Saturday to pick up litter as part of the Adopt-a-Beach program run by the Chicago-based Alliance for the Great Lakes.
Race money to promote youth fitness
WESTSHORE — Three Westshore recreation departments will use their $5,000 grants from the inaugural Run For the Young to fund programs that promote healthy lifestyles among the region's youth.
