Peppy 2009 VW Jetta TDI both stylish and economical

If U.S. drivers are serious about getting fuel economy that’s comparable to many gas/electric hybrids, fun to drive, stylish, roomy and with a high quality interior, then they should take a look at Volkswagen’s Jetta TDI 4-door sedan. The TDI stands for Turbo Diesel Injection, with a very peppy dohc 4-cylinder inline 2.0 liter making 140 horsepower and with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It also qualifies for an income tax credit. How’s that for starters?

Priced at $22,270, we also had another almost $6,000 in optional equipment, most of which just gild the lily. The navigation system is $1990, the Tiptronic automatic costs $1,100, the power sunroof is $1,000, $450 for the 17”alloy wheels, the lip spoiler is $329 and rubber mats $199. So much for comfort and convenience. The real appeal is in the driving, which I found to be much more than just competent, even a bit sporty with fine steering feel, cornering with confidence and modest body lean and strong, sure braking.

The ride is quiet with some engine clatter at idle and during acceleration, letting you know that you’re driving a diesel, but still with a high degree of refinement.

The cabin is among the best in its class, with many soft touch surfaces and nice looking plastics. Controls are mostly handy with clear gauges, and the navigation system incorporates most audio functions.

Seating for me meant that sitting close to the wheel as I do, my knees hit the lower part of the dashboard. But the seat lever enables you to lower yourself and avoid the problem. Still, legroom for normal people is fine and headroom okay for all but taller drivers. Rear seating is sufficient for smaller adults, but six-footers will feel cramped.

We had planned to use the Jetta to pick up our son and daughter-in-law at the airport, but the trunk room wasn’t big enough to handle the large suitcases from a two-week vacation in California.

In any event, I can easily recommend the Jetta TDI as a very wise choice in this compact segment.
