DiMauro Cleaners goes to extremes for customers
Published May 9, 2008

“You name it, I can do it,” DiMauro Cleaners owner Joe DiMauro said of what services his shop provides.

“We do laundry, dry cleaning, leathers, suedes, alterations, wedding dress preservation … about the only thing we don’t do is bulk laundry. And if I can’t figure out how to do it, I’ll find someone who can.”

The St. Edward’s graduate has been in the business for close to 20 years, and while he says he doesn’t want to “toot his own horn,” he does say, “I am the end all be all. I’m the one waiting on you. When you come into the store, you’re being taken care of by me. There’s no 16-year-old girl behind the counter. Ninety-nine percent of the time, Joe is the guy you’re dealing with. I press the shirts, I hand touch everything and I do 90 percent of the bagging. I’m the owner and the worker.”

DiMauro is one of the only local cleaners to use undiluted Wetset Maxx, a fairly expensive cleaning solvent that helps rid clothing of some of the toughest stains.

“I hand scrub every collar,” DiMauro said. “I virtually eliminate ring-around-the-collar. I also rinse shirts five times. If you don’t rinse enough, the cleaning chemicals might not wash out and the shirt will look grey, dull and discolored. I make sure the shirts are white and bright.”

One of DiMauro’s customers, Ed Godic of Bay Village, said after taking his cleaning to DiMauro, he would never go anywhere else.

“He is absolutely pristine in his work,” Godic emphatically said. “The work is exact and done perfectly. The cleaning and pressing are of extreme value. He’s a great guy and the service is great. I can’t say enough about him.”

Frank Patterson, another customer and owner of Ohio Chimney and Masonry, said as a business owner, he knows everything is about quality.

“He’s like gold,” Patterson, an Avon Lake resident, said. “I go to Vegas a lot, and I have nothing but silk shirts and am very particular about them. When I take the shirts out of my bag after traveling, they look brand new. There’s no wrinkles.

“Some shirts that I had prior to going to Joe, he brought the life back into them. I get years out of them where before I used to have to replace them every year.”

Mike Hellebrekers, a financial advisor for Wells Fargo Advisors in Westlake, said he would never hesitate to send anyone to DiMauro Cleaners.

“He clinched my business when he called me on a Sunday at home to ask me a question to make sure he was doing what I wanted.” Hellebrekers, a Rocky River resident, said. “The way that he treats his customers is first class.”

The only difference between two men walking down the street, one looking good and one looking bad, is the dry cleaner they go to, DiMauro said.

“I go to extremes for my customers,” he said. “If you want a 99-cent or $1 shirt, go down the street. But if you want a shirt that’s done right, pants done perfectly and a suit to look the right way, you come to me. I’m not the most expensive, but I’m not the cheapest.”

To illustrate that theme, DiMauro has come up with a new tagline: When convenient is no longer enough. Many people may take their clothing to a dry cleaner’s because it is down the street but are continually disappointed by the quality, DiMauro said. His business may not be the most convenient, but it is the best in terms of quality, he said.
