As the game ended on Feb. 12 at Westlake, the celebration was on for the Demons girls basketball team.

After winning their 12th-consecutive game, a 34-20 victory over Amherst, Westlake’s players and coaches took turns cutting down the nets as the Demons also secured a split of the Southwestern Conference title with Olmsted Falls, the first conference championship for Westlake since the 2015-16 season.

Westlake finished the regular season 19-3 overall and 17-1 in the conference, with just one of those losses coming in Ohio – to Olmsted Falls on Dec. 11. Over winter break, the Demons traveled to Florida to play in the Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational, where they finished 1-2, losing to teams from Florida and New Jersey. Since then, Westlake has been a perfect 12-0.

Leading the Demons against the Comets were seniors Gina Adams with 17 points and Abby Carrington with seven.

Westlake led by just seven points (20-13) at halftime and by six after the third quarter (23-17). Thanks to a fourth quarter in which the Demons outscored Amherst 11-3, Westlake finalized their conference-winning victory.

The Demons, seeded second in the Division I Elyria District, return to action Thursday at home when they play the winner of No. 7 Lorain vs. No. 10 Elyria.
