The elephants will be on parade Aug. 7 as the Knights of Columbus Father Ragan Council 3269 will host two shows put on by the Kelly Miller Circus at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on the council grounds.

“Fifteen hundred seats will be available for each performance,” Knights of Columbus Grand Knight Fred Metz said in an interview last week.

The Kelly Miller Circus has been in existence since 1938, according to the circus website, kellymillercircus.com.

Today, the circus travels from city to city with a fleet of 25 vehicles.

“This will be the first time that we’ve had a circus come to town in I don’t know how long,” Metz said. “They have international stars from all over the world.”

The show’s elephants will be put to work the morning of Aug. 7.

“They use the elephants they have for the circus to set up the (show) tent,” Metz said. “At 9 a.m. (Aug. 7), they invite the public to come and watch them set up for the event. They are doing it the old-fashioned way.”

A portion of the proceeds from the circus shows will benefit the Knights of Columbus.

“We were trying to supplement ways that we raise money for charitable services,” Metz said of why the Knights of Columbus decided to host the circus for the first time. “We are hoping this would become an annual event.

“Last year we donated close to $50,000 to nonprofit organizations in the Avon-Avon Lake area,” Metz said, adding many of those donations were made to Catholic churches and schools.

“Before Aug. 7, any tickets that we sell, the circus is donating money back to us,” he added.

Presale tickets cost $10 for adults and $6 for children 12 and younger. Tickets will be available the day of the shows, but the prices will be $15 for adults and $7 for children.

To give those interested in the show a preview, Metz said two circus clowns – Carlee and Charlie – will visit the Knights of Columbus pavilion at 1783 Moore Road at 2 p.m. today (July 22).

“The public is invited to watch them perform,” Metz said, adding the performance is free.
