AVON
Stolen truck
A man came to Avon’s police station on March 4 to report that he had given his Ford truck four months ago to an Avon resident he found on Facebook to do repair work. A week after that, he saw the truck posted for sale on Facebook Marketplace. He contacted a man who claimed to have bought the truck to no avail, so came to police to report his truck stolen. Police sent charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle to Avon Lake Municipal Court.
Purse grabbed
Avon police are investigating a woman’s complaint that her purse was stolen from her car on March 5 as she went into the Meijer gas station to pay.
Park vandalism
A representative of Avon Parks Department came to police on March 6 to report vandalism to park benches, a sign, a tree and a bridge in Schwartz Road Park. An investigation is pending.
Hobby Lobby theft report
Police responded to a March 8 call from Hobby Lobby that there had been a prior theft at the Chester Road store.
AVON LAKE
Clinic call
On Feb. 25, Avon Lake police went to the Cleveland Clinic main campus to interview a male about suspicious activity that had been reported several days earlier. Officers completed a report but no charges have been filed.
Traffic stop
Police cited the driver Feb. 28 for driving under suspension and violating marked lanes. Officers also arrested the driver for several outstanding warrants and transferred custody to Sheffield Lake police.
Bench warrant
Avon Lake Municipal Court officials called police on March 2 to serve a bench warrant on a 60-year-old resident for failure to appear. The man was arrested, then released on bond.
Resisting arrest
Police witnessed a driver making multiple marked lanes violations on Jaycox Road the afternoon of March 2. After performing one of three field sobriety tests, the driver attempted to get back in her car and drive away. She was taken into custody for OVI and resisting officers during the arrest.
Aggravated menacing
Police received a call March 3 that a female was being held against her will in a car that was parked in her driveway. Police arrested a male for aggravated menacing, OVI and a weapons charge.
Stolen funds
A woman came into Avon Lake’s police station March 1 to file a report that someone had stolen $300 from her EBT (electronic benefits transfer) card. Police have no suspects.
Substation trespassers
Police went to the First Energy substation on Avondale Road early morning on March 5 after the operator spotted someone on the property. A male was apprehended and arrested for aggravated trespassing and possessing criminal tools.
Later the same day, First Energy called to report another person trying to steal copper wire from the same property. Despite calling in Westlake police department’s K9 unit, officers were unable to apprehend the suspect.
BAY VILLAGE
Car entered
A Sunset Drive resident reported at 4:35 p.m. Feb. 28 that her unlocked vehicle had been entered overnight. Nothing was reported missing. Police remind residents to remove valuables from their vehicle and lock the doors.
Soil snatchers
An Elmwood Road resident at 2:23 p.m. March 2 reported that a man and a woman were in her backyard collecting what she believed to be soil samples. The couple then jumped her fence and left the area. Police responded to the area, but the couple was gone.
Ding-dong-ditch
A West Oakland Road resident reported at 12:41 a.m. March 5 that someone rang her doorbell and ran away. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate anyone.
Personal fraud
A Nantucket Row resident reported at 12:26 p.m. March 4 that someone had fraudulently used his personal information in an attempt to secure a loan. Police are investigating.
Professional fraud
An East Oviatt Road business owner reported at 12:09 p.m. March 3 that one of his former employees had fraudulently used his business account to pay off several credit cards totaling over $900. Police are investigating.
FAIRVIEW PARK
OVI
Officers cited a 58-year-old Cleveland man for operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs after being reported on March 1 for reckless driving traveling west on Lorain Road. The citation includes a mandatory court appearance at Rocky River Municipal Court.
Disorderly conduct
while intoxicated
A 24-year-old Cleveland man was charged with disorderly conduct after reports of a verbal altercation with his girlfriend on West. 202 Street. The man was found by officers walking down the street with signs of alcohol intoxication.
OVI
A 21-year-old woman from North Ridgeville was stopped in her 2007 Mercedes Benz and given a field-sobriety test. She failed and was taken into custody where she blew nearly twice the legal limit (.154). She was also detained and issued a new court date for a previous warrant for driving under suspension.
OVI
Police arrived at a single-car accident on Canterbury Road where a truck needed to be towed out of a ditch. The 60-year-old from Westlake was taken into custody and during his interview struggled to remember if he drank “two big” Busch Lights or Bud Lights. He was charged with OVI, failure to control and expired tags.
On the run
The driver of a Hyundai Elantra trying to avoid police in the Great Northern Mall parking lot was eventually pulled over and found to be harboring a 25-year-old man with an extradition warrant out of Louisville, Kentucky for fleeing and escape. Police also found less than 100 grams of marijuana in the car. The driver was released from police custody on scene and charged with parking in a handicap parking spot.
Asleep at the wheel
Police found a 57-year-old woman passed out in her Volkswagen Tiguan along Decker Road with two empty bottles of Barefoot Chardonnay in the backseat and a cup filled with alcohol on the floorboard beneath her. She was charged with refusal and physical control after police had to help her from her vehicle before refusing field-sobriety testing. Her vehicle was toward and she was later picked up at the station by her boyfriend.
NORTH RIDGEVILLE
Floored
The Long Tree Grill had an intoxicated man fall who could not get off the floor on March 3. The 69-year-old local man was charged with disorderly conduct intoxication.
Fled
Officers attempted to stop a car on State Route 10 on March 3, but, after first pulling over, the driver took off. The pursuit was terminated. The driver has not been identified.
ROCKY RIVER
Grocery theft
Police arrested a 38-year-old man for theft of just under $300 in merchandise at Giant Eagle on Feb. 27.
Catalytic converter theft
Police are investigating a River Oaks Drive resident report on March 1 that someone stole the catalytic converter from his vehicle sometime the previous night. The resident reported seeing two men in an older SUV in the area prior to the theft.
Walgreen’s theft
Police are investigating after a Walgreens employee reported the theft of two bags of beauty products by a man who fled the store and was seen boarding an RTA bus on March 2.
WESTLAKE
Indecency at the Y
Police charged a man for public indecency after someone had filed a complaint that the man had exposed himself and performed a lewd act in front of him earlier in the day at the Westlake YMCA. Prior to the Feb. 28 arrest, the suspect had been charged with gross sexual imposition in Lorain County.
Ditched
Shortly after midnight on March 4, officers responded to a report of a vehicle stuck in a ditch on Interstate 90 near the Clague Road exit. The driver was field tested and arrested for OVI, and subsequently charged with failure to control and refusing a chemical test, having two OVI convictions since 2011. Her license was also suspended.
Stuck in the mud
At 3:30 a.m. March 4, police responded to a vehicle stuck in the mud by the Columbia Road off-ramp of Interstate 90. The officers conducted a field sobriety test and arrested the driver for OVI.
Overdose call
Officers went to the Westfield Apartments early on March 4, responding to a reported overdose. They found a man unresponsive and administered doses of Narcan. The man was transported to the hospital. The case is still under investigation.
After the crash
A car crash on Crocker Road during evening rush hour on March 5 resulted in an altercation between the two drivers. Responding officers found that a driver of an SUV had drifted off Interstate 90 and re-entered improperly, causing a collision. The fight occurred when the driver whose car was struck followed the SUV off the highway and confronted the driver. The at-fault driver was found to have an outstanding warrant and seven open suspensions of her driver’s license. Officers arrested her for OVI, driving under suspension, refusing a breath test and failure to maintain assured clear distance.
Armed robbery arrest
Officers took a call on March 6 that an armed robbery had occurred at Bradley Beverage on Center Ridge Road. When they got there, they found the suspect had fled with an undisclosed amount of money. After an investigation, an aggravated robbery warrant was issued for a Brunswick man who was arrested two days later. Police recovered a gun and other evidence linking the alleged suspect to the crime. The man was subsequently arraigned in Rocky River Municipal Court and held on a $500,000 bond.
Car flipped
Police responded to calls of a roll-over car crash at Detroit Road and Settlers Reserve Way on the morning of March 8. They found a Honda SUV on its side and two drivers involved in the incident with minor injuries. The officers found that the SUV had pulled out from a stop sign and had been struck by the other car. The driver of the SUV was cited for failure to yield from a stop sign.
