Let’s get ready for a season of giving thanks by recognizing the selfless hard work of the Lorain County Office on Aging. Its Home Delivered Meals Northeast program is a true labor of love. This year, about 140 seniors in Avon, Avon Lake, Sheffield Lake and Sheffield Village are grateful for the service.
As COVID-19 cases explode, the program helps on two fronts: People 60 and older don’t need to worry about being exposed to the virus while grocery shopping, and seniors who have mobility issues or other health worries don’t need to worry about having access to healthy meals.
We are thankful for the agency’s commitment.
We are also grateful for the longstanding work of the national Meals on Wheels program, which serves several communities in Cuyahoga County. The local programs deliver meals to anyone unable to shop for or prepare meals safely by themselves. That includes people who need services temporarily, such as those dealing with COVID-19.
Those programs rely on volunteer cooks and drivers and do not receive government funding, so there is a charge for the service, but you can’t put a price on peace of mind. According to Meals on Wheels America, 58 percent of clients live alone and for many, the volunteer bringing their meal is the only person they will see that day.
Anyone interested in volunteering with the Lorain County Office on Again program can call 440-949-8146. Donations are also accepted. Checks should be made payable to Lorain County Office On Aging and mailed to 320 Gateway Blvd. N., Elyria, Ohio 44035. Note on the check that the donation is meant for Home Delivered Meals Northeast.
The Westlake Meals on Wheels also welcomes volunteers and donations. The program delivers meals to clients in Bay Village, North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Township and Westlake. Go to www.westlakemealsonwheels.org to learn about volunteer opportunities, how to start delivery and how to donate. You also can call 440-871-2551 to start delivery.
Rocky River Lakewood Meals on Meals serves clients in those two communities. More information about volunteering, donating or becoming a client is available at www.mealsonwheelsrr.org or 440-333-6298.
It’s obvious we are a nation of inherently nice, empathetic people. Let’s celebrate this goodness.
