To the Editor:

With all due respect to a recent letter writer, I believe the writer might want to refresh his memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words that people should be judged by the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin.

Obviously many people do not embrace Mr. Trump's character content, nor his rhetoric nor his actions. This is not racism, as the writer suggests.

One cannot yell "Fire" in a theater, nor incite, by words, violence, sedition, or slander or hate. So "free speech" does not mean irresponsible speech.

The preamble to the Constitution speaks to establishing justice, ensuring domestic tranquility, providing for the common defense, promoting the general welfare, and securing the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.

To understand the complexity of our American democracy, one might want to read the U.S. Constitution, in its entirety, as a first step to becoming part of the informed electorate. Cherry picking words and phrases out of context leads to misguided conclusions.

The letter writer asks the readers "to respect everyone's right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."

I couldn't agree with the writer more.

As to how, we as a society, try to reach this high ideal, is the debatable question.

I enjoyed reading the Guest Column by Brian Love, reflecting on Hal Holbrook's performance as Mark Twain. He was a gifted actor and will be missed! Years ago, my wife and I had the opportunity to meet with Hal after his performance in “Death Of A Salesman.” His role as Willy Loman was one of the best I can remember. We found Hal to be "very down to earth" in conversation and wished we could spend more time with.him. Rest in peace, Hal.

Perhaps in a perfect world North Ridgeville would hire firefighters based on performance and their ability to save lives rather than their sex.
