Area golfer achieves rarest of feats

Elyria resident Jim Wise’s bold shot on the Par-4 14th hole at the Valley of the Eagles Golf Club paid off on April 10. From the blue tees at the Elyria venue, he launched his shot 344 yards over the water surrounding the 14th green and through some trees. The ball cleared the elements and rolled into the cup for a hole-in-one, also known as a double-eagle or albatross. A hole-in-one on a Par-4 is a golf accomplishment that is considered nearly impossible, with odds estimated to be a million-to-one. The shot has only been recorded once in the history of the PGA Tour. At the Phoenix Open at the TPC Scottsdale course in 2001, Oklahoma native Andrew Magee holed out his tee shot from 332 yards away on the 17th on the way to a 44th-place finish. Ha Na Jang and Minjee Lee have done it on the LPGA Tour and Rahil Ganjee and Chip Beck have one to their credit on the Korn Ferry Tour.
