The battle over the Little Brown Jug will have to wait until 2021.
On Monday, the Westlake High School athletic department announced that due to positive COVID-19 cases within the football program, the Demons would be canceling this Friday’s regular season game at Bay.
“In following CDC and CCBH health guidelines, we had to cancel the game,” school athletic director Tony Cipollone said in the announcement, posted to www.westlakeathletics.org. “In an abundance of caution, we have also cancelled Thursday’s reserve game.”
With this week’s cancellation, the Demons’ 2020 season ends with a record of 4-5, a marked improvement over 2019’s 0-10 finish. They played an eclectic schedule this season as a pseudo independent after opting not to play within the Southwestern Conference’s six-game schedule framework. With the school set to join the Great Lakes Conference next fall, they faced primarily opponents they wouldn’t normally see, such as Brookside, Lutheran West, Revere, Orange and Cuyahoga Falls.
On Oct. 29, they defeated Parma High School at Byers Field, 29-14.
Next time they will play will be against Bay High School in Westlake Sept. 24, 2021 to renew the football rivalry of neighboring schools.
