The Bay Village Board of Education gave fall contact sports a thumbs-up to begin their seasons at its meeting Aug. 24, and the Rockets wasted little time in getting back into action.

The boys soccer team opened its season Aug. 26 with a 5-0 victory over Great Lakes Conference newcomer Lakewood. Senior Brock Pickett finished with a hat trick, while Danny Kruzer scored twice. Keeper Alec Carras nabbed five saves.

Bay’s girls volleyball team opened its season last week, going 3-0 in matches against Keystone (25-11, 25-19, 25-15), Elyria Catholic (25-19, 25-13, 16-25, 17-25, 15-13) and, most recently, Aug. 29 at Fairview (25-12, 25-22, 25-22). Brooke Brewer was a scoring leader for the Rockets all week, accounting for 35 points over the three matches.

As for football, the Rockets will open their season Sept. 11 at GLC foe Elyria Catholic.

Neighbors play rivalry games

Before Avon met Avon Lake on the football field Aug. 28, the schools’ rivalries were renewed on multiple playing surfaces.

On Aug. 25, the Eagles picked up a 3-0 victory at home over the Shoregals. The next day, Cael Saxton’s goal in the 28th minute proved to be the difference in the Eagles boys soccer team’s 1-0 win over the Shoremen at home. At the same time, the Eagles and Shoregals girls soccer teams battled to a 1-1 tie. On Aug. 27, the Eagles girls golf team picked up a narrow 174-176 win over the Shoregals.

Longhorns clean up in duals

Lutheran West’s girls golf team suffered its first dual loss of the season Aug. 25, falling 164-174 to Independence at Shawnee Hills. Other than that blemish, the Longhorns have been strong in match play, posting an 8-1 record overall and a 4-1 mark in the Chagrin Valley Conference. They bounced back Aug. 27 with a 196-205 win over Gates Mills Hawken at Punderson State Park Golf Course. Hawken sophomore Ella Wong medaled with a 39, but Longhorns senior Sam Webb led her team with a 43, and Nadia Kauntz (49) and Callie Wabeke (50) helped pace the win.

Webb, a 2018 State qualifier and Ashland University commit, has led the team in low rounds, medaling in seven of the team’s nine duals. In the loss to Independence, her low-round of 32 tied her previous school record.
