WESTLAKE - More than 1,200 first through fourth grade students will enter a whole new world of learning when school starts in Westlake Thursday, Aug. 29. The following week, kindergarten and pre-kindergarten student will join them.
Anyone who has driven by the construction project at 27555 Center Ridge Road may have noticed dozens of construction trailers being replaced with trees, shrubs and grass as first day nears.
What is impossible to see from the street are the completed classrooms, activity areas, media centers and bathrooms in areas called houses to reflect the comfortable, homey-feeling school officials sought to create. Teachers were expected to arrive this week to unpack classroom materials and get their rooms ready.
Business Manager David Kocevar said kitchen equipment was in and a final inspection was scheduled for Aug. 19. The adjacent cafeteria and gym as well as the front office area were substantially complete, he said.
“We're in the tail end,” he said.
The project began with planning and design in 2016 following voter approval of a 1.3 mill bond issue and 1-mill permanent improvement levy that pays a substantial portion of the $38 million, 154,000 square-foot facility.
