New playground equipment brings excitement to Avon park
A new ride has been installed at Every Child’s Playground on Detroit Road. The Gravity Rail, with an 89-foot-long track, allows children ages 5-12 to climb a ramp and sit in a swing, similar to one from a swingset, then ride in a circular path.
The Gravity Rail was funded by Joe Firment Chevrolet Inc. in Avon.
“We wanted to expand the playground area,” recreation coordinator Clare Harasimchuk said. “It’s something we thought all kids would enjoy.”
This is phase one of a two-phase project, Harasimchuk said. Miracle Recreation will install an Extreme Generation Playground. ExGen includes slides, climbers, towers and activity areas for kids to explore.
The massive size of the equipment makes it unique, Harasimchuk said. In fact, only five have been installed across the country, she said.
“We’re hoping this is a destination where the kids will find different things each time they visit and will keep coming back,” Harasimchuk said. “We hope phase one will bring excitement for the next phase.”
The city does not have an estimate of when the ExGen will be installed, Harasimchuk said. The exact size of the equipment also is unknown.
Earlier this spring, the park received a new play fire truck with two slides and a climber. The structure, made to resemble a fire truck, was built by employees from Lowe’s in Avon. The company previously built a pavilion at the park and also helped with the playground’s story book walk.
More exciting events are coming up in the city. The parks and recreation department will host its 6th Annual Health and Safety Fair June 8 at Avon High School. The event includes activities for families including a petting zoo, musical performances by the Avon High School Jazz Band and Avon Electric Orchestra and helicopters for attendees to explore.
The Avon Police Department will make identification badges for children and the Avon Fire Department is bringing emergency vehicles for kids to roam through.
Free food, games, crafts and giveaways also will be included. The event is from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. For more information call 440-669-0978.
